Wadadli is the old Arawak word for Antigua, it means ‘our own’. In 1535 explorer and historian Oviedo was the first European to learn the word ‘barbacoa’ from the Arawak. So the barbecue as we know it today was just one of many inventions that the peaceful, trusting pre-colonial Caribbeans gifted to cultures around the world.
